The Anniversary of the Founding of the United Steelworkers

May 22 marked the 69th anniversary of the founding of the United Steelworkers (USW).

On that day in 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio, the forerunner of our union, the Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC), began building of an organization to counter the years of injustice against workers.

Throughout the formative years, this union endured the growing pains that many great organizations encounter. The milestones of the history of the “Steelworkers” can be found here on the USW website.

A merger in 2005 with the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union (PACE) brought two great organizations together that resulted in the new union adopting its current name.

For over 120 years, unions have stood up and fought for millions of workers and working families and the United Steelworkers are proud to have played a major role protecting and advancing the rights of working men and women.

As the United Steelworkers moves forward in its 70th year, it will meet the challenges to stop the destruction of middle-class values being brought on by political and corporate forces across the United States and Canada.

In Solidarity

Leo W. Gerard
President of the United Steelworkers
